Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. “I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness,” says Sutton of his costume choice. “I’ve always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source.” Sutton, who has created work for the likes of Hermès, Burberry and The New York Times, spent three nights on a skidoo with his trusty Red Epic camera at temperatures of -25C to snap Hughes carving effortlessly through the deep snow, even enlisting his own father to help maintain the temperamental suit throughout the demanding shoot. “Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I’ve done in 20 years of snowboarding,” says Hughes of the charged salopettes. “Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob’s enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights.”

People continue to use technology and innovation to push the envelope, and film is no stranger to that! A friend recently posted this video to my Facebook wall by Tabb Firchau of Freefly Cinema and needless to say, I was blown away! Upon some more research, I found that the videographer actually used a remote control Cinestar quadrocopter with a camera (Sony FS100 and 18-55 lens) mounted to the bottom of it to capture this video. What other innovative ways of capturing life with video have you seen?

This week’s Friday Flick was produced by Rick Mereki (@Rickmereki). The title of the third and last of three short films in this series, and this week’s Friday Flick is titled “Eat”. You know how they say “they make it look easy”? Well, these guys certainly made this flick look easy, but in order to accomplish this, a lot of work and travel had to happen. Here is what they said about their adventure:
“3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage… all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ….into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films = a trip of a lifetime.”
Let me know what you think about this flick, and be on the look out for the other two in this series in the following weeks!
